Assessor Skills
Every aspect of the employer-employee relationship demands best practice HR activity, particularly with regard to the legal instruments regulating the relationship. From the moment an applicant walks into a potential employer’s place of work, legal requirements come into play, starting with the initial recruitment and selection process, and ending with the exit from employment. The purpose of the Assessor Development Programme is to provide Assessors with the skills, tools, understanding and confidence to maximise their performance as Assessors and carry out assessments which conform to best practice standards. The programme architecture is as follows:

  • Understanding the role of competencies in the selection process
  • Getting to know the critical competencies required for an assessed for role and what these “look like” in behavioural terms
  • Understanding the legislative framework which surrounds assessment and how to conduct a legally sound assessment process
  • Identifying assessments which uncover evidence of job-relevant competencies
  • Core assessment skills of administration, observing, attending and recording
  • Eliminating bias and other cognitive errors – evaluating responses fairly and consistently
  • Providing feedback
  • Practice, practice, practice! The old adage “practice makes you lucky” holds true in the assessment context. A central element in this Programme is authentic “mock” assessment sessions, where participants can practice playing the Assessor role and receive personalised feedback on their strengths and areas of ‘work in progress’.
